Sting - Ain't No Sunshine

Following the Bill Withers trail again, and I'm a Sting fan. Love what he can do musically, not everything he does turns to gold, but he's a creative soul and enough of his songs have left a positive imprint.

This is a mistake though. Not the version, really cool chilled back version. But the 'tache - it's just horrendously wrong. Reminds me of a 70's star in the making in the wrong kinda movies. (Don't ask how I know, it's not something we're proud of ... like Sting's effort at facial hair here)

Bill Withers - Use Me

While on the whole Bill Withers jazz I thought I'd slip this song into the mix. Not necessarily the first one people think of when they think of Bill Withers, but cool all the same. He really likes taking his time with these, which is cool for school as far as I'm concerned.

Patrick Troughton Interview

So following the interview by the most recognised Doctor, here’s a fascinating interview with Patrick Troughton who for the benefit of those too young or ignorant to know was the second Doctor playing him in the years 1966-1969. It’s good to see the actor behind the character. Well spoken, engaging and informative I strongly recommend this here interview.

da man cd

Knight Rider Intro

So here it is. Lasting longer than Airwolf or Street Hawk and undoubtedly more famous than either, this is the quintessential man and his machine programme of the day. Hey my heart may prefer SH, but I cannot dispute the ratings and the fact that people just loved Michael Knight and his talking car, which is fair enough.

da man cd

Street Hawk vs Knight Rider

Sure it’s amateur stuff to an extent – but this is quality editing to see a race between the only land vehicles that mattered on television back in my day – good work by this hombre! And you can expect the Knight Rider theme to be coming on a post soon.

Don’t know which I preferred more, I know KR was a bigger success I terms of ratings and fan appeal, but I always had a soft spot for SH and although David Hasselhoff was never better than in this programme he still has to encounter for the grief he’s given me since. The KR tune is neat, but I also loved the SH business as it appealed to the child racer in me. And so I agree with the hombre’s winner for this one. The Man – The Machine – Str… ahh you know the rest.

da man cd

The Man - The Machine - Street Hawk

Speaking of those shows which gives you the 101 on the deal of the show here’s another programme that was a household favourite of mine back in the day. Ahhhhhh yes, Street Hawk. More memorable than Hunter, but not by much. Still I remember my brother, David and I having hours of fun playing the Street Hawk games. Quality stuff.

Indeed the man, the machine – Street Hawk

da man cd

Stevie Wonder - That Girl (Live 1982)

This is a grossly underrated Stevie track and although it's worth hearing the album track on his Musiquarium album of circa 1980 or 1982, this live version is also the business.

da man cd

Manimal - Opening Sequence

Yeah, so here’s that intro to Manimal – back in the days when they gave you the full 101 on what the whole deal was about so you had a good idea of what you were getting yourself into.

da man cd

Manimal (panther transformation sequence)

Now I’m going to put on the theme to this programme as soon as I find it, but this is really what the programme is all about – the transformation. Neat stuff for the time, but I imagine also rather expensive for the time as well, a bit like the Hulk-outs from the television series.

Still this is another programme I remember from back in the day – ahhhhhhhhhhh … anyway.

da man cd

Hunter Season 2 Intro

Have I mentioned that I'm reflecting back on all those good shows of the past? It would be criminal of me to do so without referring to this awesome cop show.

OK when I say awesome I don't really remember much about the show itself, but I don't forget the theme tune and that's why it's so awesome. So there.

da man cd

Doctor Who - Tom Baker Interview

Keeping with the nostalgic theme of recent posts, here is an interesting insight into playing the role of the Doctor in the BBC's top sci-fi programme. You'll have to wait for another post for me to give the old story of my bad timing, but Tom Baker was and is my favourite portrait of the Doctor.

I still believe he's the most popular image of the Doctor when he is mentioned and the recent polls just reflect the fact that it has been over 25 years since he last appeared in the role!

Anyhow, enjoy this for what it's worth.

da man cd

Peter Beardsley

Now here is a player who I reckon is seriously overrated. I loved the player. Thought the guy was awesome and not given the kudos he deserved. I loved him as a player then and thought it was criminal to sell him, especially seeing him at Everton. I know his first love was always going to be Newcastle United, but for me I loved the player for what he did for the team. Absolutely brilliant.

da man cd

John Barnes

When I first got into football this bloke was my favourite. He also proves something rather profound about life. You maybe extremely gifted in a creative art but that doesn't transfer to other areas of life or indeed can be taken as a reflection on your character.

Not saying the brother sucks outside playing, or is a bad man. Just to say that just because you play football well shouldn't take it to mean you're great at other stuff.

Anyway, enjoy this tribute to the man who was my favourite player back in the day.

Back in 2005 when things weren't looking so good, a beacon of hope was the comedy of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Awesome show with so much quick wit and fun. Nah I don't always go for their political spin, but it's good to laugh at the ludicrous nature of politics and no one does it better. Columbo Opens

I think I got into Columbo from the Wellingborough days but I can never be too sure. I do know that when Authrine and I got married this was one of the few things that united us - Columbo. We loved watching the show and I loved watching it with the love of my life.

In all the time that I watched on the various channels I never knew it had an opening like this, or that it shared a similar slot as another fave Quincy. Still I live and I learn.

da man cd

Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven

Rock music can really make a big fuss over some people as if they are the best thing since sliced bread when the reality is they are very good musicians or singers and that's about it. Nothing is beating the sliced bread this side of heaven.

Speaking of which Mr. Clapton would be one of those highly exalted rock icons who perhaps could do without most of the adulation.

For all that though, he be one of those very good musicians. This is one of my favourite songs and the heart of it conveyed musically and vocally can be emotionally provocative especially in remembering the tragic circumstances in which it was written.

Quality song, quality sung and performed in the ideal format - unplugged (kinda).

da man cd

Stillness Extended

So I was talking about the extended version of it and would you believe it?

So it's not the complete deal, it's enough to give you a flavour of how much better it is in extended form and the band having fun with the track which if you're not careful could just get borng in its monotony. It doesn't and this is the reason why. And what quality to get it live as well!!

da man cd

Stillness in Time - Bassically

Again back to those heydays at university, where for the first four weeks of the term I was a millionaire and then in the last three weeks I was barely making it through the day. Ha thank God for a wife with the bank card.

Anyway, it was whilst working at the uni radio station that I came across this track by Jamiroquai. There's an extended version which is even better, but this is fine. Absolutely top notch.

As for our apprentice bass player here. Is he really playing? I hear him a bit at the beginning, but for all the finger movement I hear no sound - could always just be me I guess.

da man cd

Manic Street Preachers - Kevin Carter

When I went to university in 1996 my dear friend Lloyd introduced me to this group and this track. Can't remember if he had it in his collection or if it was something the uni radio station had.

In any case on hearing it I thought it was alright for music that I don't usually subscribe to, so I'm happy to post it in gratitude to Lloyd for showing me more to music than gospel and in gratitude to God for brining Lloyd in me life.

da man cd

Mayssa Acoustic Human Nature

One of the things about this YouTube business is the wannabe pop stars who are given their chance.

Forget american Idol or X-Factor or whatever - YouTube is the place to hear the good and not so good display their wares.

You know, if I was MJ I wouldn't be too concerned about Mayssa challenging the original for quality. The acoustic deal is great, the singing ... well she did her best I'd like to think so I can't knock that ... if you read what Da Man CD is writing.

da man cd

Human Nature with lyrics

Y'all might as well enjoy the MJ posts as they're going, because there won't be many of them.

This is another good pop tune that some group would go onto sample for their track. Of course it was the second track that linked me to the old tune and of course the old tune is better than the new tune hence me not having a clue at the moment what that tune was.

In any case, enjoy MJ continue to write in advance the reasons for his impending unorthodox behaviour that's dogged the rest of his life. His reason for all that simply being it's his human nature. Apparently.

da man cd

Another Part Of Me with lyrics

So songs like Andrew Gold's one would leave me forgetting and not knowing who did it. This track would turn out a bit differently.

I've since grown to believe that Mr. Jackson is somewhat over-rated, as with most people ascribed the title of King of ... such and such.

However this was a good song and then turned out to be an even better tagline for the unfortunate jokes made against Mr. Jackson's alleged plastic surgery affiliation.

Even now it provides minutes of pleasure both as a good pop tune and a fine display of lyrics that can be adjusted for any one-liner for jokes about people in hospital or at the doctors.

Therefore, God bless Michael Jackson.

da man cd

Never Let Her Slip Away - Andrew Gold

In the late 80's and early 90's I was gaining conscious and more of an identity apart from my parents. That was clear in the music I enjoyed listening to.

There was a stage where I heard quite a number of catchy tunes that stuck in the head but I never knew who wrote it or performed it.

Years and years later, since I went to university and got into this internet business as well as the importance of knowing who actually has influenced you, I came across the performers of those early influential tunes.

In fact it was only this year that I found that one Andrew Gold had recorded this song and apparently it didn't do too badly the pop charts when it was released. A really significant tune as I was into those kind of melodies and tune structures, etc.

All of that as a reason why I'm posting it today ... and indeed I hope it never slips away from memory either. I look forward to bequeathing me daughters with it in the fullness of time.

Gladiators Introduction 1993

I didn't ven know they had a spot like this so I thought it was worth slapping onto let everyone know why I watched what I watched. Jet on Gladiators

I was not into women and stuff as some of my peers were growing up until I probably hit 16. That is not to say I was unaware of the female form and had not appreciated it in some shape or form.

And this was the shape and form. I rejoiced when a cable/satellite channel chose to re-show some of the Gladiators as it gave me a chance to pass this valuabe lesson in the beauty and athleticism of the female form onto my son Kevaughn.

Deborah and Abigail also developed an understanding of what it is to be woman, that is the role model of Jet.

The only downside is when she opens her mouth to talk - as is the downside with many women - but it's not all bad. So I give thanks for great blessings.

Jamie and the Magic Torch and bakewell tarts and Criminal Intent

OK I'm on a roll with the ol' YouTube clips tonight. I'm actually doing this whilst watching one of the later episodes of Criminal Intent with the wife.

Anyhow I was with some friends earlier today and I brought up the whole issue of loving the name Jamie because it was linked to this programme. Isn't it wonderful how the littlest things can spark off the littlest things from way back when. Absolutely brilliant.

Jamie always rocked with me.

Oh by the way, the episode of Criminal Intent sees the one where all four detectives are investigating what appears to be a corrupt top judge. I believe it's a rarity for all four detectives to be on the same show, so it's a special justifying the late hours. (I should be asleep, it is after midnight after all, still on to the bakewell tarts for the last 20 minutes.)

Rock on Jamie.

What was also evident was the fact that it was scheduled on Friday evenings so sometimes in the summer I'd have enough time to watch this intro before I had to switch the telly off as the family observed the Sabbath that way.

In any case, for old time's sake - here's to memories.

My Tribute To Jose Mourinho

The only news that matters to me at the moment is Jose Mourinho leaving Chelsea. This is great news for Liverpool as it means it can be a straight out two-way fight for the Premiership between us and United. Other than that it’s a sad day for English football.

I like Jose a lot and thought he was a refreshing, charismatic face for football here. It’s a really bad move for Chelsea as unless they bring in an ace coach then they’ll not make the most of what they’ve got. The jury’s out for Avram Grant but it would take a whole lot of convincing for anyone to forget the impact of the Special One.

Along with Tottenham’s plight, as an onlooker this makes for interesting football in seeing how things change. New eras tend to mean a time of bedding in then a team in the manager’s image. Interesting to see what that means for Terry and Lampard who appeared to be big fans of Mourinho. For the latter especially I’d sit tight on contract negotiations until after Christmas, maybe even wait until the end of the season. So which players will be in and which would be out? What team selection and system would be favoured? That’s all the fun of these developments.

In all this though I truly wish
Jose Mourinho the very best in what he goes onto. He has not been faultless however twisted the media agenda may have been. Perchance some of his statements were not of the humility that I associate with truly great people, but his record cannot be denied and to me his brand of football was the most effective in all areas that I’ve seen in my lifetime. Arguably the only club football I saw that matched that level of efficiency across the pitch – attacking and defending – was the AC Milan of Guillit, Van Basten, Rijkaard, Baresi and Maldini.

Some pundits think that football is about the players but to me men like Mourinho,
Ferguson, Wenger, Capello, Hiddink, Trapattoni and their ilk prove that great managers and coaches have as much to say on the team selected, style of play and sheer force of personality that an inspirational leader, motivator and manager can bring to the whole set up.

Cristiano Ronaldo top 30 dives

If you think this must be da man CD's YouYube day for football, you be right! This one is particularly for my Man Utd friends out there. Sure Cristiano Ronaldo is an outstanding player and was crucial to the club's success last season. Yet there are some unsavoury parts to his game that need to go. And that there has been 30 sighted is an indictment on the actor ... I mean player ... nope I was right with actor.

If not they surely need to send this set of compilations in and get their card FOR FREE. Some absolutely priceless efforts here including the miraculous recoveries. Plus whoever the genius was with the music backing deserves a reward in themselves. George Lucas should have used this version in his films, it would have made them world record breakers!

Footballs Oscars - And The Award Goes To ...

OK, so I was an abysmal goalie at school. Ironically after that time at the school I got into diving in a major way and loved playing in goal. Speaking of diving though, I loved acting as well and this neat compilation shows what we love about the game - quality acting. WWE could learn a thing or two about convincing play from some of the antics here. And as another season approaches, here's hoping for some more Academy Award nominations for outstanding acting by a lead actor.

Goalkeeper Blunders: I Am Not Alone

Back in the day, long ago and far away, I layed in goal for my school team. The only problem was I didn't like diving for the ball and indeed there were a number of other goalkeeping necessities that seemed to be lacking in my repertoire. As a result my time in goal was somewhat forgettable. At least I'd like it to be forgotten.

Then I saw this and it made me feel, just as Michael Jackson once sang, I am not alone.

To all those rubbish goalies out there - Enjoy!

Paul McCartney - Feet in the Clouds

Lyrically nothing to shout about - but there be something musically about it that reminds me why I think Paul McCartney is an undoubted genius when it comes to this songwriting business

House To House: Whatever Happened To Maxwell House?

I don’t have any memory of their adverts per se and as a man who didn’t drink coffee their influence on my life was non-existent. What I do remember is that back in the day (late 80’s/early 90’s) it was the thing to drink or know someone who drank Maxwell House. Although I don’t remember what their adverts were like I do remember they had adverts. Now I don’t see or hear of them anywhere. I wonder whatever happened to them.

Well you know how it goes, when something hits my interest peak I get online whenever I can and find out as much as I can about it. Sure enough one Google search later and
this pops up. Evidently not dead or buried the question is although you can ‘spruce up your house today’ in America, what’s the deal with the UK product?

With further
‘reliable’ research, I was shocked to find out that not only is Maxwell House still going it’s going strong. Methinks there be a conspiracy surrounding its plight on these shores even though I’ve found that they can be purchased in bulk.

The real sign of established acceptance in the British consumer marketplace is that the product is a staple of the big stores like Sainsbury’s (which still sucks).

Well it just goes to show what little attention I pay to the market trends. There it is in Sainsbury’s costing either the extortionate £3.64 for the
coffee powder or the outrageous £1.49 for the cappuccino knock-off effort. There you go, though, typical Sainsbury’s.

So after exhaustive research and a nostalgic trip down memory lane what has happened with Maxwell House? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. There is no conspiracy in the UK. It’s still readily available. Apparently it’s still good to the last drop as it has been for over 100 years and I’ve just been ignorant in missing out on all the quality goodness in the product.

Following a conversation with the wise sage Simon Lovatt (my colleague at work who is the Man of Peace) I was also enlightened as to the reason for the apparent decline in public interest, which has little to do with the barmy prices. The deal is that due to the proliferation of coffee types and products on the market in the years proceeding ‘the day’ Maxwell just has not been such a force or pushed itself as much as they did when coffee drinking was a bigger deal.

One thing is for sure – I am not getting onto coffee – not at those prices!

Wotsup With Da Man CD

Where have I been? What do you mean, where have I been? Anything going on in football? No. (Oh alright a couple of decent signings for the Reds, but you know it’s all speculation until the new season starts – oh just a few more weeks now). Have I got access to YouTube or Dailymotion? No. Just moved house, hoping to get the wireless connection in by tomorrow that will change all that and then I can access the stuff again and post it here.

And the house move is the reason why I’ve been absent not only on this blog but on that other blog that you’ve been checking.

Thankfully the move is done now. We’ve been in the new crib for roughly three weeks now and although still getting used to things on first impressions it’s sweet. I’m walking distance from church and work which is great for the travel expenses and we’re less than five minutes walk away from the local Sainsburys superstore. Sure it’s ain’t Tescos, but it’s something.

So although it doesn’t mean I’m all blazing on the writing trail, it does mean that there won’t be too much time before I am back on the blogging trail, catching up with all those things I’ve been meaning to do from book reviews to random YouTube posts.

So until then, and it won’t be too long, thanks for your concern.

World Cup 1970 (all 4 goals in the final included)

The eagle eyed among you may have noice my disposition towards football. I love it. I love reading about it, talking about, watching it, playing it, the whole kit and kaboodle.

In my football education I was informed that the best player ever was Pele and the best team ever was the 1970 Brazil team of which Pele was a part.

So when I came across this particular beauty I knew where it belonged!

Earth, Wind and Fire - After the love has gone

This is one of those versions that give a good taster of the real track would sound!

Still worth listening to for the beginning beat stops and the fact that after all these years obviously these gentlemen have never come across the concept of taste in fashion.

Enjoy this one

The Incredible Hulk ending

As it should have been eh? I do like it for the wrestling link!

The Family Guy Stewie Walks Away

I would have used the original Hulk theme tune and the scene of David Banner walking away ... but then I came across this and although I'm not as big a fan of Family Guy anymore, hey I do like me this spoof of it!

Making The Most Of Your Opportunities

So, my team Liverpool gallantly lose in the Champions League final to AC Milan. I have no complaints. Milan did not dominate the match, but Liverpool did not make the most of their opportunities to score. Some pundit said that Pennant wasn’t good enough or had insufficient quality, but I felt Pennant played very well. He cannot help it if when he’s in a position to do damage but there’s no one to cross to and when he did cross more often than not it set up potential goal-scoring opportunities. Once more the inability to put spherical object between and underneath set posts as well as completely over the white line has meant we missed out. I felt the Mascherano substitution was wrong as proven by the winning goal being scored after he came off where before both he and Seedorf were subdued. That’s easy to say in hindsight and I can just about see Benitez’s logic in making that decision especially if planning for extra time and penalties.

No one to blame really, we just didn’t make the most of what we had and were made to paid for it. I do think its justice that Milan won the title – they are a better team, although they didn’t play like it yesterday. I have this thing that great teams should win the big trophies and that’s what has happened this season.

As a result this season for Liverpool can be adjudged to have been a disappointment. We met the bare minimum requirements for a club our side of qualifying for the Champions League next season. Our domestic cup runs were disappointing, although my mate Billy did highlight that this was because of the postponements in the League Cup clashes which meant that we played a number of games close to each other including the Barcelona matches so they took priority. For all that though we still should have made a better account for ourselves and were thus exposed to fair accusations from Chelsea of only focussing on one trophy. For a club our size that’s not good enough. We’re not in a position to challenge on all four fronts – and I don’t think we will be next season either – but we still should at least have a couple of trophies in which we’re strongly challenging.

Although it is a disappointing season there is still hope for the future. With new owners and a sense of optimism at the club and indication of changes over the summer the prospects are positive. I still have confidence that Benitez is the right man for the job, I am hopeful that we’ll do more than catch up with Chelsea and Manchester United next season and we can win the Premiership. Nothing else matters for me. We’ve done the Champions League gig, we’ve done the FA Cup deal, no one’s that fussed with the League Cup – the Premiership is the goal. I wouldn’t mind Mourinho complaining that we were only going for one trophy at the end of next season if that was in regard to the Premiership.

Music And Movies For Free?

I recommend you check this blog entry out which talks about copyright issues for music and the like.

The issue interests me as I'm sure there are a number of people who have made the most of the Internet and computer technology to rip CD's and forego the hassle of paying for music.

It's a bit like the issue with movies where people find ways of getting it 'for free' from various web-sites. I'm still intrigued into how much we should make an issue of this and what changes, if any, should be made to the law either to make it easier for people to get access to music or to make it quicker for illegal merchants of music and movies to be prosecuted?

Jay's Movie Reviews: Night at the Museum

Night at the Museum
Certificate PG
Starring: - Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Dick Van Dyke, Owen Wilson, Steve Coogan, Ricky GervaisRunning Time 108 minutes

From the writers of Herbie Fully Loaded and The Pacifier comes a kid friendly movie typical of those antecedents such as Jumanji and Zathura, worked with a little magic of director Shawn Levy (Cheaper by the Dozen and The Pink Panther remake).

The all star cast throws the concept that it was the only way to make the audience’s minds drift away from the fact that there is no true plot to the movie. Even with the classic humour that Ben stiller always brings to the silver screen, it just wasn’t enough to lift the film to a high enough standard to call it a true family film.

Putting aside the plotline for a moment you can watch to a certain enjoyable extent. The jokes that get portrayed by Stiller throughout the film are funny and with the cameo of The Office genius of Ricky Gervais as the museum director give something to an older, British audience. But, let down by an agent I presume, Robin Williams was given a terrible script, although his head may have been a little too cold from filming Happy Feet.

The film starts with a terribly long winded explanation of Stiller’s character, Larry. 45 minutes of a background story established within the first 15 minutes. But when he finally gets the job at the museum you can actually sit down and enjoy some of the laughs that the museum can bring. Such as a T-Rex who thinks it’s a dog and plays fetch with his own rib, Cowboys (lead by Owen Wilson) who fight Roman Legionnaires (lead by Steve Coogan) and a rather naughty monkey. And a comedy film just isn’t complete without the likes of a comical monkey gag is it?

But all good things must come to an end, and this end just so happens to be in the form of Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney and Bill Cobbs, the old night watch that Stiller has replaced. Out to steal the key to make the museum come alive at night, Stiller is aided by the museum exhibits to bring them down.

But deep underneath the decaying skin of the film there does lie some true motto’s of life and some powerful messages although you may be too tired to really notice them. Messages like even if you’ve failed before, keep trying. Or doesn’t matter what you believe, even the unbelievable is true. Yes, some of these morals can be thought of in greater detail. But, like this film, I don’t see the point.

Overall it was a waste of 108 minutes. If the boring 45 minutes at the start had been cut down to 15 or 20 at least then it may possibly have been a good film. If you really do want to see it, wait until January next year when the DVD is in the sales.

Dawkins The Evangelist

This guy is Richard Dawkins. He's an important scientist who has built a reputation for arguing vehemently against God ... or against the existence of God, which is fair enough. He's come out with a book called The God Delusions extending this particularly argument, which is also fair enough. It's funny, though, that he should so passionately express such belief in the importance of not having belief in God in a somewhat evangelistic style.

As with some element of the evangelistic wing, though, Dawkins is not completely sorted in his arguments as this link will highlight if you have a read.

In the meantime it's worth considering again whether or not the existence of God really is that important?

Shalom
